The nation’s top player Zach Evans just released his top five, and Alabama football was on it. Can the Tide add him to the 2020 recruiting class?

It has been a strong class for Alabama recruiting, but they still have some work to do if they want to earn the top recruiting class. However, help might be on the way with the top player of the 2020 class. Zach Evans just released his top five schools, and the Tide were on it.

His top five was surprising for a few reasons. The obvious surprise is the fact that Evans, from Texas, has no Texas schools in his top five. He explained this in an interview with 247Sports, saying that Texas “It really just comes down to competition.”

He also complimented how great the competition in the SEC is, so it makes sense why three of his five teams are in the SEC. The two others are two of the small number of schools to make it to the College Football Playoff in its existence.

If Evans is looking for competition, the SEC is where you want to go. Oklahoma has been consistently better than Texas, but they are still in the Big 12, where defense is optional. Ohio State is a quality school that has sent a lot of talent to the NFL, but the Big 10 is not the same as the SEC.

In part of the interview with 247Sports, Evans said that Texas could “barely beat Georgia. What happens when it comes to an Alabama?” This shows that Evans clearly respects what the Tide have done in terms of recruiting, and that makes it sound like he has more respect for the Tide than he does Georgia. Overall, the interview just sounds like he wants to be tested by the best, and Alabama is the place for that.

If Evans does join the Tide, he will be tested in the running back room. Trey Sanders will be a freshman this season, so they will battle for carries. There will also be Keilan Robinson, some rotational guys, and anyone else the Tide manages to sign in the 2020 class. It wouldn’t be easy, but Zach Evans doesn’t want easy. He has a chance to be very special, and the Tide would get the most out of him.

Right now, it feels like a guess as to where Zach Evans commits. All teams in his top five are good schools that will prepare him for the NFL. That being said, there’s no reason to believe that Alabama doesn’t have the same odds to land him as everyone else. If anything, their odds are even better.
