Chicago Cubs prospect Brennen Davis eyeing Major League debut in 2023
Chicago Cubs prospect Brennen Davis has begun the 2023 season with Triple-A Iowa and that is not the path that he appeared to be headed down when the 2022 season started. Davis entered the 2022 season as the top prospect in the Cubs' organization and the belief was that he would be with the Major League team by September.
Davis struggled to begin the season with the Iowa Cubs in 2022 and a back issue forced him to miss a majority of the season and also saw his prospect status take a hit. Davis lost the top spot on the Cubs' prospect rankings to outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong and is on the cusp of being removed from most Top-100 prospect rankings for Major League Baseball.
Davis is once again off to a slow start with the I-Cubs to begin the 2023 season but he is not deterred from his goal of making the Major League roster before the season is over. While speaking with Tommy Birch of the Des Moines Register, Davis has no doubt that he will be ready when the call is made.
""I know there's stuff that I need to check off to get to that," Davis said. "But at the end of the day, there's an end goal and the end goal is to help the big club win and I'm going to be able to put myself in a position that when my time's called, I'm going to be ready.""

There are a couple of hurdles that Davis will need to clear before proving to the organization that he is ready for the promotion to the Major League level. The first hurdle is proving that he can stay healthy. The Cubs have maintained that Davis' back issue from 2022 won't be an issue moving forward and it should be noted that there weren't any flareups during Spring Training.

The second hurdle is that Davis will need to find success at the Triple-A level. Davis is slashing .206/.339/.368/.706 in 251 career plate appearances in Triple-A. Until Davis can turn his fortunes around at Triple-A, questions will remain regarding whether or not he will reach the ceiling of his potential.
